MenScience’s Latest Potion

MenScience Androceuticals makes some interesting products that some might consider cutting-edge. I was astounded to read about their Daily Shampoo that contains Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids, also known as glycolic and salicylic acids respectively. These names should sound familiar to you because they are both common ingredients in skin care products and are chemical exfoliants. So what are they doing in a shampoo? Well, if you think about it, your scalp needs a little love too. I’ve never asked a dermatologist about the benefit of using AHA or BHAs on your scalp and hair, but I imagine that they could be helpful for guys with oily scalps and hair, or guys that tend to use a lot of product in their hair. Salicylic acid is commonly used by folks with acne because of it’s ability to unclog pores, so if you tend to break out along your scalp from oil buildup, this shampoo might be a good choice for you.

I would personally consider this product to be a deep-cleanser because of its ability to remove oil and product residue. Try it once a week. I’m not sure that I would recommend it for daily use, as it recommends on the bottle, because a little natural oil in your hair can actually make it easier to style (as long as you don’t have fine or thinning hair). And those same natural oils provide some protection against the elements. Fine hair tends to get oilier quicker so you’ll probably want to wash it everyday.

The shampoo still contains ammonium lauryl sulfate, which is a foaming agent or surfactant, so consider the AHA and BHAs a little extra cleansing oomf.

It’s available for $24 at the MenScience Androceuticals website.
