Gucci posterboy and Hollywood leading man James Franco took to the cover of Flaunt magazine this month baring more than his soul. His bare (and we mean BARE) ass was front and center on the cover. Perhaps he was still trying to prove that despite his recent movie blockbuster Planet of the Apes, he’s about as far from simian as the evolutionary process will allow. There’s not a single hair on his rather tan buttocks, which makes one wonder: is the backside the new back?

Time was that men wouldn’t be caught dead with hair on their back. Somehow, hair on ones chest became sexy but once you crossed over to the great unknown on the other side of your shoulders, it was out of the question–sort of like the dark side of the moon. Now, it seems the bum could be the next body part to fall prey to the razor and esthetician’s wax.

What do women think of a hairless backside? Do they prefer their men fuzzy or free of hair?

Both shaving and waxing have their own risks. With shaving, you’re prone to razor burn, ingrown hairs, and–for a lack of a better phrase–ass stubble. With waxing, you’re at risk for traumatizing the skin and ending up with two cheeks full of zits and folliculitis (not my idea of a good look). Perhaps James Franco would like to share his techniques with the rest of the class?

Guys? Girls? What do you think? Should hair stay or should it go?

It’s hard to feel too bad for Tom Brady these days. That supermodel wife, the 9-2 record, his $72 million contract — did we mention that supermodel wife of his? But the National Enquirer‘s report this week that the three-time Super Bowl champ was seen exiting “New England’s foremost authority on hair restoration” had to make most men cringe — except the Jets, of course.

Still, it got us thinking: Brady used to be a kind of ideal man, and yet here he is hawking Uggs — this after Justin Bieber put him in his place for stealing his haircut, which, in turn, has Brady sporting these current Viking locks of his.

So maybe going bald isn’t such a bad thing after all; maybe it’s just good timing for the guy — all guys with thinning hair, really — to get a new look. Herein, our playbook, with apologies to Jake Gyllenhaal’s already long week of Photoshopping….

AXE Hair looked to the runways and Hollywood royalty for their latest style inspirations.

Their newest products, Smooth & Sophisticated Look Shine Pomade and Deep Clean Shampoo + Hair Scrub can help you go from slob to slick—Mad Men-style. If you’re not sure how to pull off the classic look, AXE asked Amy Komorowski, celebrity hair stylist who has fussed with the hair of Justin Timberlake, Ryan Reynolds and Ed Westwick, for some tips to getting the high polish-look. Here’s how to get it right:

Start with clean, wet hair.

Shampoo with AXE Hair Deep Clean Shampoo + Hair Scrub with rock crystals to help remove hair of gunky build-up.

Typically most styling products work best on dry or almost dry hair, but for this polished style, I recommend applying AXE Smooth & Sophisticated Look Shine Pomade to wet hair in order to lock in the moisture.

To begin styling, take a fingertip amount, rub it vigorously between your hands and spread it evenly through the hair from front to back and back to front – adding more as necessary.

The key to creating the look is in the severe part. Take a comb and create a side part in a straight line from the front of the head to the crown, then comb the hair into the desired style.

Take another fingertip amount of the shine pomade, rub it between your hands and lightly go over the finished look to ensure it stays in place all day.

If you’re a product guy, your head and hair might need a good scrub, Styling products can leave residue on your scalp and hair, making it difficult to style and—in extreme cases—can contribute to hair loss. Give your head a good scrubbing with Axe Deep Clean Shampoo and Hair Scrub. It contains rock crystals to help exfoliate your scalp and remove product buildup. But don’t use it everyday—just once a week will do.

WIN IT NOW! If you want to give the look a try, we’re giving away 5 sets of AXE Hair Deep Clean Shampoo + Hair Scrub and Smooth & Sophisticated Look Shine Pomade to the first 5 people who email tips@hommegrooming.com with their name, address, email and telephone number! You must be a US resident and 18 years old or older to win.

AXE Smooth & Sophisticated Look Shine Pomade, $5.99 to $6.99 at drugstores

AXE Deep Clean Shampoo + Hair Scrub, $4.99 to $5.99 at drugstores

New York nightlife mainstay and tranny performance artist Amanda Lepore has jumped onto the celebrity fragrance bandwagon. She has launched a fragrance called “Amanda” with notes of champagne, steamed rice, cucumber, strawberry and mandarin…seriously. What did you think Amanda would smell like?
Adidas’ newest line SLVR (it’s eco-friendly, relatively affordable and functional clothing, not a Motorola phone, we swear) has opened a new store in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood.
NowSmellThis has a great review of Guerlain’s Mouchoir de Homme (Gentleman’s Handkerchief), a true classic scent (it was created by Jacques Guerlain himself in 1904). Unleash your inner fop and inhale this potent potion. [NowSmellThis]

The Van Wagner billboard company has rejected a new Armani Exchange ad meant for the Meatpacking District in NYC because of a naked man’s behind is visible in the background. Have they never seen the Tom Ford ads with the fragrance bottle wedged between a woman’s thighs and barely covering her vajayjay?

A couple of weeks ago, the New York Times printed a story that natural eyebrows are back in fashion and runway models around the world are starting to sport bushy brows. Of course, this story printed just 1 day after I had my eyebrows done by the eyebrow master himself, Ramy, who gives good brow without making you look like an out of work drag queen.

I’ve been against over-sculpted eyebrows for a long time. Some guys went too far with the wax and tweezers. The Gotti spawn, Jesse Metcalfe from Desperate Housewives and even Julian McMahon of Nip/Tuck all come to mind as overpluckers. Drop the tweezers boys and step away!

A natural brow always looks best on a man, but that doesn’t mean that you should let them run wild like Colin Farrell. You still need to tame them with a little tweezing because the unibrow is never fashionable. A well-groomed brow can work in your favor!

Tips for a better “guy-brow” after the jump!

Here are some rules for getting a better “Guy-brow”:

—Never wax the lower part of your brow: It’s okay to wax the top and the space between your brows, but waxing underneath will give too much definition which makes it look unnaturally sculpted.

—Use tweezers lightly: Tweezing the lower part of your brows is fine but not too much. A little plucking goes a long way, especially as you move further from your nose.

—Don’t fear the arch: An arch in your eyebrow can open up your eyes and defeat that Cro-Magnon heavy-brow look. Some guys with especially thick brows should consider thinning out the ends toward your temples. It will prevent your brows from looking too heavy and draw more attention to your eyes. However, don’t overdo the arch. It’s best to see a professional for this.

—Work WITH the shape: Don’t try to put too much shape in your eyebrows if they don’t naturally have any. And don’t try to make your brows thin if they are naturally thick and bushy. You will be upset with the results and it will look ridiculous when it grows back in. In most cases, nature will give you the brow size that flatters your facial structure. Go with it, just give it a little clean up.

If you need a little help with your eyebrows, visit Ramy in his private studio on 31st Street in Manhattan for a little tutorial in Guybrow Grooming. He’ll clean you up and send you out looking great. Tell him HOMMEgrooming sent you!

I admit that I haven’t been watching the Emmy’s tonight, but I’ve been looking at some of the photos that have been coming off the wires. It seems that Jeremy Piven (Entourage), Patrick “Dr. Dreamy” Dempsey (Grey’s Anatomy)Â and Peter Krause (Six Feet Under) ran out of time when getting dressed and forgot to have a chat with their Gillette Fusion razors.Â

Stubble was everywhere on the red carpet tonight and straight women around the world cringed.

If you’re going to go through the trouble to get dressed to the nines in a great looking tux, rent the limo and get your hair trimmed, why not shave? It takes just a few minutes to do it yourself or you could opt for a luxurious, straight-razor shave for about $30.

HOMMEgrooming Rule #1: A tux demands a clean-shaven face unless you’re sporting a tasteful, well-groomed beard. Stubble is not acceptable for black tie events.

Check out the Fox News story.

I hear from Now Smell This that David and Posh’s Intimately fragrances, that I mentioned a few days ago, will launch next week in the UK. Here’s some info from today’s Women’s Wear Daily about the notes:

“The Intimately Beckham for Him juice, concocted by International Flavors and Fragrances, features notes of bergamot, grapefruit zest, cardamom, violet, nutmeg, star anise, sandalwood, patchouli and amber. The women’s scent, blended by Firmenich, offers notes of white flowers, bergamot, rose petals, Casablanca lily, tuberose, orange blossom, vanilla, sandalwood and musk.
The fragrances, which follow last year’s release of David Beckham’s Instinct, were created under arrangements with Coty.”

Did they have to call it “Intimately Beckham for Him JUICE?” Interesting choice of words…Can you find the juice in this picture?
