This April, Clarins Men will expand it's offerings with five new products—including serious age-fighting formulas.

This April, Clarins Men will expand it’s offerings with five new products. Three of the products will target the visible signs of aging such as wrinkles, skin sagging and rough texture. The other two focus on invigorating the skin and fighting signs of fatigue (read: hangovers, late nights, jet lag) like puffiness and dark circles around the eyes. If you’re in your 20s, you might stick with more invigorating products, leaving the line-control formulas for your 30s and beyond, when the war against wrinkles becomes more pressing.

With the launch comes new packaging and a great new look. Clarins is world renowned for its skin remedies and powerful plant-derived ingredients sourced from all over the world, and these new additions are no exception.

Here, we take roll of the newest additions to the Clarins Men lineup, their key ingredients—and their claimed benefits:

Anti-Fatigue Eye Serum ($29)–Ginkgo biloba aims to reduces puffiness and dark circles (i.e. erases signs of a Monday morning hangover). Ginseng, bison grass and galanga extracts comfort the fragile skin around the eye while boosting stimulation stimulate skin. Oat sugars tighten the skin and smoothing away fine lines. And trehalose prevents moisture loss while purslane soothes and softens the skin.

Line Control Balm ($52) and Line Control Cream ($52)– Paracress is supposed to reduce wrinkles while firming skin. Caffeine (a vasodilator) minimizes the loss of firmness said to “slow the formation of a double chin through lipolytic action.” Bison grass promotes blood circulation while Shea butter moisturizes and nourishes the skin. The balm and cream both Clarins’ patented Expertise 3P Complex to fight environmental stressors and pollution.

Line Control Eye Balm ($35)–In addition to paracress, oat sugars, moisturizing shea butter and purslane extract, the Line Control Eye Balm includes maritime pine, an extract, the company says, that stimulates circulation in the eye area and reduces the appearance of dark circles.

Revitalizing Gel ($36)–In addition to ginseng, bison grass, galanga and purslane extracts, the Revitalizing Gel contains Clarins’ Expertise 3P Complex and Goji extract from the Himalayas to invigorate the skin.

I was once a Botox virgin. But yesterday, I gave into temptation.

I am one of the crazy people under 30 who takes a preventative approach to fighting wrinkles. Call it obsessive. Call me crazy. Granted, I didn’t have many wrinkles to begin with, but they were certainly there, stretching across my forehead and staring back at me each time I looked in the mirror. On the recommendation of a friend, I booked an appointment with Yael Halaas, M.D., a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon on the Upper East Side.

While I felt silly asking a plastic surgeon for help addressing my barely noticeable wrinkles, the good doctor put me at ease and reinforced my belief that being proactive is important. She didn’t, however, reinforce my fear that the grooves in my forehead would become deep, cavernous gorges overnight if I didn’t do anything about them immediately. And she didn’t make me feel like another vain gay man that is obsessive about their skin.

“It’s easier to prevent a wrinkle than to treat one,” Dr. Halaas said and explained that once a wrinkle is formed, they can be difficult to erase—requiring facial fillers, laser treatments, facial peels, that can get expensive very quickly and are not permanent solutions. By starting Botox before I hit 30, I could actually save money in the long run.

Photo: Getty Images

According to Dr. Halaas, a shot of Botox can affect your eyebrows. By paralyzing the overactive muscles in your forehead that raise your brows and cause the wrinkles, the forehead smooths out. However, depending on where the injections are placed, your brows can be raised (usually good when done right) for a youthful, awake look or they can fall (bad) for a Cro-Magnon style brow.

When Botox first came out, you might recall the women all over LA who ran around looking like terribly alert Vulcans because their eyebrows were raised to extremes. That’s why its important to see a reputable dermatologist or plastic surgeon for your fix. Wrong placement could cause you to resemble a geek attending a Star Trek convention.

Here’s what getting Botox is like:

First, a topical anesthetic cream numbed the area. Once the anesthetic worked its magic, Dr. Halaas made numerous injections across my forehead with a tiny needle (no, it didn’t hurt really). Once she was done, I held ice to head and felt a bit like a beat up pin cushion. In the end, I looked like a pubescent teen with blotchy red spots on my forehead where the needle pricked me.

The aftermath:

Leaving the office, I understood why Upper East Side socialites always dashed for their private towncars with Jackie O sunglasses and a scarf tied around their heads. You really don’t want anyone to see your face for an hour after your shots. Because I’m not a socialite and I live in Brooklyn, I took the subway and I didn’t have large sunglasses or a scarf to conceal my not-quite-clandestine date with the needle.

On the train, a woman gave me an all-knowing smile as if to say “Ooh girl, I know what you did this afternoon.” It felt like a gesture of solidarity. But I still kept my head buried in the August issue of Out with Nate Berkus on the cover. By the time I made it back to my apartment the redness was gone and my secret was safe once again.

The Waiting Game

One of the misconceptions of Botox is that it works immediately. Numerous curious friends have said “Oh, let me see!” However, it actually takes three or four days to take full effect, so my Swan unveiling will have to wait a couple more days.

Now that I’ve had the toxin mingling with my neurons for 24 hours, I have this strange sensation in the area where I shot up. It’s like wearing on a light mud mask. It doesn’t hurt and there’s no sign that I received any injections, I’m just aware of my forehead and I know something is going on up there.

After just one day, the wrinkles are still there but it is getting harder to raise parts of my eyebrows.
This stuff is definitely working. Was it worth the investment? Definitely!
Stay tuned for updates! I might even post before and after photos if you’re lucky.

Snake Venom in Eye Cream: Anti Aging Miracle Worker or Just Another Snake Oil?

It’s not news that men are willing to go to great lengths to fight the signs of aging. Hell, over 400,000 men injected their faces last year with a toxin created by an anaerobic bacteria that causes food poisoning for a few expressionless and wrinkle-free months (I’m not knocking Botox, just pointing out the facts).

So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Snake Venom has found its way into an eye cream by Peter Thomas Roth. Okay, so PTR’s Un-Wrinkle isn’t formulated with the real deal, can’t-feel-my-legs, Indiana Jones-style snake venom. And no snakes were forced to give up the goods for an eye cream. So don’t worry about paralysis or unsightly swelling (unless you’re allergic). The cream contains a synthetic viper’s venom, called SYN-AKE, and its makers claim that this “active peptide mimics the venom of the Temple Viper, which has been proven to be very effective in blocking muscular contraction.”

In other words, it’s another product that is vying for the title of “over the counter Botox.” But is it effective? Good question. Who knows? I’ll let you know if I look 10 years younger next month.

The eye cream does contain some ingredients worth mentioning that offer skincare benefits:

Peptides: Some limited research shows that peptides actually help to create collagen, the face-plumping wonder.

Hyaluronic Acid: A fab moisturizer that binds water to the skin—it keeps your skin from looking like leather.

Vitamins A and E: Antioxidants that are common in skin care products.

What do you think? Anti-aging Miracle cream or fad-filled snake oil?

Today’s New York Times features a fantastic story by Natasha Singer about a number of dermatologists who recommend simplifying your daily skincare regimen. You don’t need a 15-step, half-hour routine each day—something that Hommegrooming has been saying for a long time now. Instead, these derms recommend just 3 products: a mild cleanser, a sunscreen, and a treatment product if you have wrinkles, acne or spots of sun damage. You don’t have to spend a whole lot, either. Brands available at drugstores work just fine—especially now that brands like La Roche-Posay are available at select CVS stores.

One of the most interesting points in the article was the discussion of whether or not people need to use moisturizers. I’m a big proponent of moisturizer because I have dry skin at the moment and it helps protect skin against the winter cold. I do think that some people can get away with not using a moisturizer. However, you shouldn’t skip the sunscreen and most sunscreens contain moisturizing ingredients.

Here’s what Dr. Diane C. Madfes, a clinical instructor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in Manhattan, recommends for daily skincare:

2. La Roche-Posay Anthelios SX—Mexoryl SX sunscreen is combined with moisturizer.

Guys will still need to use a shaving cream, but you really don’t need an aftershave. Your moisturizer with sunscreen will do the trick.

Your eyes are the first part of your face to show your age. That’s why you need to protect them from the sun, which causes premature aging with its harmful UVA rays. But before you start dabbing your Coppertone under your peepers, heed this warning: some chemical sunblock ingredients can be irritating to the delicate skin around your eyes. That’s why it’s best to use an eye cream that is formulated with an eye-friendly sunscreen. Chances are, the cream will have a physical sunblock, which means it deflects UV rays instead of absorbing them like it’s chemical cousin.
I just started using Clarins Sun Wrinkle Control Eye Contour Care Ultra Protection SPF 30 and I like it a lot. While it’s a mouthful to say, it contains titanium dioxide, a broad-spectrum sunblock with SPF 30 protection. You’ll need to pat it in a little more than usual, but it’s moisturizing, contains Vitamin E and is resistant to much of the sun’s powers.
Another reason to use sunblock for your eyes? Sun exposure also triggers melanin production (the stuff that gives your skin its tan appearance) and sometimes hyperpigmentation (an overproduction of melanin often caused by sun damage) can cause those dark circles under your eyes. Hyperpigmentation is not the only cause of dark circles, but that’s a lesson for another day. Your dermatologist can help you to identify the culprit and solution if you’re having trouble lightening up.
