New York Magazine gave us another reason to dislike male models (and, perhaps, ourselves). In a stroke of genius and cruelty, they handed a particularly baby-faced chap named Cole Mohr a video camera and asked him to document New York Fashion Week. The resulting 2-minute video not only crushes your dream of someday walking down a runway in New York that’s not part of JFK airport, but it makes you loathe models more than you did two minutes earlier. They are younger, prettier, gayer and more vapid than you could ever hope to be. It doesn’t really matter, but it sure makes for great entertainment. Did anyone check his ID to make sure he’s old enough to smoke and drink vodka?

Dove, those friendly folks who make all sorts of products that you use when you’re at your girlfriend’s house, has created a short film to help demystify the whole “goddess in advertising.” While this ad/film is meant to help women feel better about themselves by revealing all the magic and photoshopping of images to make a regular woman blessed with high cheek bones look drop dead gorgeous in an ad or magazine cover, it is also kind of upsetting for the guys who lust after these ultra-perfect ladies (I’m not one of them). So, I am suggesting that guys watch this video, not to flush your fantasies down the toilet but to let you know that the same thing happens to male models; the makeup, the hair styling, the retouching and all that fun. Next time you look at Men’s Health and see that guy with the perfect abs, just remember that they are probably enhanced by your friendly photo retouching genius at a prepress agency.

Â

I’ve been reviewing some of the photos from New York’s Olympus Fashion Week here in Bryant Park and I’m a bit shocked to see that the hairstyles for men have mostly remained unchanged since the Fall 2005 runway shows.

The biggest trends:

— The forehead is usually covered by long hair up front, so start growing out your bangs.
— Sideparts are in for longer hair. But the classic “short back and sides” with a sidepart seems to be phasing out.
— The Schoolboy style (seen at the right in the John Varvatos show) still reigns supreme.

— Long hair is below the chin in length but short enough that it doesn’t rest on shoulders.

Of course there are some exceptions. DKNY showed a number of off-the-face styles with close cropped cuts. More to come!
